How Al Hilal won it

The first goal came from the back. Kalidou Koulibaly pushed up from defence to win possession in the Shabab Al Ahli half in the 6th minute, beat his marker with a skill move, and laid the ball off to Watkins. Watkins held off pressure from Nemanja Maksimovic and finished into the bottom corner.

The second goal came within a minute of the restart. Yusuf Akcicek played a long pass behind the Shabab Al Ahli defence, and Watkins guided the ball across goalkeeper Matheus Donelli to double the lead in the 46th minute. Al Hilal led 1-0 at half-time and never looked in danger of losing that lead.

Control was the story of the night. Shabab Al Ahli managed only one attempt on goal until the 85th minute, and Al Hilal were never truly threatened across the 90 minutes. From the second goal onward, Al Hilal settled into a 5-4-1 shape and saw the game out without fuss.

What the result changes in the group

Before kickoff, the order was clear. Shabab Al Ahli sat second in the West Region with nine points from three games, and Al Hilal sat seventh with six points from three games. A home win would pull Al Hilal level on points, and that is what happened. All three clubs at the top, Al Hilal, Shabab Al Ahli and Esteghlal, now hold nine points, with Al Hilal second on goal difference.

The win also ended the visitors’ perfect start. Shabab Al Ahli had won all three of their group games before travelling to Riyadh, and this was their first defeat of the continental campaign. It was Al Hilal’s first match of this campaign against non-Qatari opposition, and it answered the 3-1 defeat at Al Shamal on matchday 3, a game Arab News notes was played with a second-string side.

The win came without Gabriel Martinelli, who stayed out with the hamstring injury he picked up in the league match against Al Qadsiah on 23 October 2026. What happens next

The West Region league phase now pauses. Matchday 4 has concluded, and matchday 5 begins after the mid-November international break, on 23 November 2026. Al Hilal will know their next continental opponent and date when the post-break schedule is confirmed.

In the league, Al Hilal travel to Al Ettifaq on Saturday 7 November 2026. That game is away, at Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium in Dammam, not a Kingdom Arena fixture. Ruben Neves is suspended for that league trip after his fourth booking of the league season against Al Fateh, but the continental tie was a separate competition, so the suspension did not apply on Tuesday night.
